Stonington Harbor, Maine.

I shot this back in 2009 when Evelyn and I visited Deer Isle in Maine. It has been many years since I have been back to beautiful Stonington Harbor. I hope I will be able to visit one morning in a couple weeks as we work our way to Acadia for our Workshop.

Revisiting an old Tetons friend and image…

I am seeing some great images from fellow photographers from out in Wyoming being posted and it makes me miss being out there. One of these days I am going to just pack up the family and move! This was from 2009 on a workshop when we tripped upon one of my now favorite places to go, the Triangle X Ranch. This is a friend and I believe the model for “the most interesting man on Earth” commercials, Hans. Hans has some incredible stories to tell! I met several other great friends on that trip that I keep in contact with to this day and will for many years to come. The Triangle X Ranch and Wyoming are truly magical places.

Let’s go fishing!

I was preparing some images for a presentation the other day and one image kept jumping out at me. I kept looking at it and studying it to try and determine why I liked it so much. I think for me it symbolizes taking a break from the hectic world, relax, go fishing. It has the feeling of solitude and peace, but not loneliness. As a child and young adult I found myself walking along a river or on the bank of a lake to reflect and relax. I think this boat has a similar feeling. It doesn’t require much thought or work to get you from point A to point B, just a little rowing. Sometimes it is relaxing to sit in the rain. You know wash your troubles away. Maybe I am over thinking it, maybe it is just a dingy.

Nothing Complicated

I like simplicity. I don’t like to have to think about compositions or meanings. I am a simple person, you get what you see. That’s the way it should always be. I saw these pilings the night before and wanted to get an image of them with soft light and movement in the water to give it a nice effect. I went about an hour before sunrise, set up and did several exposures experimenting with the length of the shutter speed to see the effect in the water. This was my favorite of the series. Simple image.

Just a “pretty picture”

John Shaw includes in his presentations a section called “pretty pictures”. I learned a lot from John and I think my favorite part of his lectures was the pretty pictures because it always reminded me of why I do what I do, attempt to create “pretty pictures”. This is an orchid at the Bellingrath Gardens in Mobile. I really liked the complimentary colors in the background in addition to the beautiful detail in the flower. Always remember to take pretty pictures.

Out for a swim.

I am hesitant to post this image for reasons that will become very apparent. I really like the image, to me it is technically good, composition is good, so what could be the problem? Well my wife Evelyn really likes it. Don’t get me wrong, I think that is great. But she thinks the frog is cute. She often tells me I am cute too. Do you see the problem? Not that I have any friends that would never let me live this down. At the risk of massive ribbing (I said ribbing, not ribbeting), I am posting this image because it makes my wife smile.
