Siam

Siam.
During our stay at the Lazy L&B Ranch, a frequent visitor was a Donkey and Siam. Siam had really great patterns on his side and was really cool for a mule. When it was going to rain Siam and Donkey would stand under these cottonwood trees facing the same direction, and sure enough it would rain within about 10 minutes. I thought Siam was very interesting and asked someone to tell me “the story of Siam”. They said years ago, one of the mares on the ranch was pregnant and there was lots of excitement when she was going to give birth. When the time came, the owner of the ranch waited and when the foal appeared, the owner thinking he was going to have a pretty new horse looked in amazement at the foal, realizing the father was none other than the donkey, he declared “shit, its a mule”, thus the name S.I.A.M. 🙂

Dude Needs a Hat too!

Dude Needs a Hat Too!

Another image from my time in the Tack Room at the Lazy L and B Ranch in Dubois, WY. I love shooting Tack Rooms and the character of the tack inside. The wear and tear of leather and straw has great texture and color. Perfect for photography. Folks find it odd that I probably enjoy shooting things at a Ranch vs. actually riding, but it is to me capturing a part of our history. I could spend hours in these rooms exploring and shooting.

Need Boots Dude?

Need Boots Dude?

If you show up at the Lazy L and B Ranch and you forgot your boots, they have about 40 pairs for the Dudes to choose from during your stay. I always enjoy visiting the Tack Rooms at Ranches to see the saddles, reins, boots, hats and everything else they have inside. There are so many stories sitting on those selves just waiting to be told, waiting to be recorded, wanting to be shared. For me, its not always about the horses, but the stories around the folks that ride them as well.

“Knock, Knock”

“Knock, Knock”

Every time I see a Pronghorn Antelope I think of this joke…sorry. “Knock, knock. Who’s there? Cantelope. Cantelope who? Cantelope tonight, Dad’s got the car.”

As I drove across the valley floor up to the Shonshone National Forest, I would see the occasional Pronghorn, this one stood close to the road and actually allowed me to get out and set up the gear! He trotted off as I got back in the car as it knew the shoot was over.

Happy Father’s Day

Happy Father’s Day.

Evelyn and I made it back to our beloved Bear Woods about 2 a.m. this morning. We left behind Wyoming, a state we feel is our second home at times. I look back on the trip and didn’t really get to shoot many images, or nearly the number of images I would normally have made, but I walk away with many memories of my first trip there with my Dad in 1976. I remember on that trip seeing a landscape for the first time. On this trip I spent time discovering, for me, the Shoshone National Forest and the Apsaroka Mountains. It was so quiet and untouched that it made me feel like that 15 year old wandering in the woods. A Dad can guide you and help to form the man you will become. My Dad guided me to love photography, and to love the land among many other things. All of my trips out there make me thing some 41 years back, but this one was special in my memories. Thank you Gunny for all of my life’s lessons and for introducing me to Wyoming.

Overlooking the Wind River Range

While I ventured into the Absaroka Mountains the other day via the Shoshone NF, looking back over the valley to the Wind River Mountains was incredible. This is definitely a place I would love to come visit again and explore the mountains and all they have to offer. I was very limited on time this trip, but sometime down the road, I will be back. Once again a trip to Wyoming was good for my soul. I really love this place.

Against a Wyoming Sky

Yesterday Evelyn and I took a drive down to the Apsaroka National Forest and rode a ridge line for a little while. It is incredibly beautiful there and we will go back today for a while. On one of the ridges I saw there beautiful old weathered pine tree standing against the contrast of puffy clouds and blue sky. Wyoming’s beauty is often in its simplicity with nature, that is why I love visiting so much.
