Moonrise over Triangle X Ranch

Moonrise over the Triangle X Ranch.

I looked for every opportunity to capture the beauty of the Triangle X Ranch when I was there, the sunrises, sunsets, and even the moonrises. Finding that day that I could capture the right balance of foreground and background light wasn’t easy, but being out there every day increased the chances. Since I was constantly on the move and handholding a lot of the images, using filters weren’t always an option. One evening I was fortunate enough to get that perfect light I was looking for to get the image.

The Wranglers

The Wranglers.

Doing a group photo can be a challenge, throw in the each person will be on horseback and the challenge factor just went up substantially! My first thought was to have them riding at closely together and catch them in an “action” shot, but that didn’t go as planned. A static pose was the way to go. Throw in the Tetons in the background and it turns out nicely!

Starry saddle

Starry saddle.

Another one of the images from the Triangle X Ranch that I did, or attempted to do was a starburst on a saddle. Typically you hope to get distinct spires, but as you can see there is a slight amount of cloud cover near the sun on the horizon and that was just enough to diffuse it. I still like the result, but would have liked it more if the spires were more distinct.

Evening Storm

Evening Storm.

I was waiting to photograph riders as they returned from the evening cookout and ride as this storm rolled in over the Teton Range. Of course I couldn’t help but to photograph it. I love the rays of light on the right and thick clouds overhead. It never did rain on me though. Remember bad weather makes great light.

The 3, I mean, 2 Chairs

The 3, I mean, 2 Chairs.

Okay, if I were going to relocate “The Chairs” this spot would be a leading candidate! It may beat our current view! These are 2 of many chairs that sit in front of the Lodge at the Triangle X Ranch, and yes I did sit and have a cup of coffee on a few occasions in one of those chairs.

Thank you again.

I want to thank everyone again that registered so quickly and filled our Spring in the Tetons Workshop at Triangle X Ranch. We were confident it would fill up, but in just over 24 hours was beyond our wildest expectations. I just released a video of my week out there if you would like to get an idea of the beauty and splendor of the Tetons and Triangle X. Here is the link:

For those folks that are already, like me, over this oppressive heat, something to look forward to could be our Winter in the Tetons Workshop, which is also at the Triangle X Ranch. Do you like the way I worked into that? Seriously, if you have ever been to the Tetons and thought it was beautiful in Spring, Summer or Fall, nothing touches its beauty in the winter. There are so few visitors to the park, as most people are skiing in town, you almost feel you have the park to yourself. Check out the link below to join us for some great food, great scenery, and great company.

The view from Spencer’s Mountain

The view from Spencer’s Mountain.

I posted an image one day from my cell phone, but to do the view real justice, I have to post one from the “real” camera. This is a spot where the Triangle X Ranch takes their guest for breakfast one day during the week, it is also the location of the set from the movie “Spencer’s Mountain”. What a view! On a side note, we are seriously considering and in the process of putting together a workshop at the Ranch (we would base the workshop at the Ranch) which would include a horseback ride (if desired) each afternoon during the workshop. It would be designed to not only capture the beauty of the Tetons through photography, but let you immerse yourself in a little “Ranch life” for a few days. It would include the lodging, meals, riding, and a couple little extra things that Cecil and I will surprise everyone with, so the question is who is interested? It would be a little more expensive than our usual Tetons experience, but filled with much more than we have ever done previously. Let me know, we want to finalize something very soon.

I was traveling yesterday from a couple of lectures in Omaha, with Tamron and Rockbrook camera, so I didn’t get to do a post. Stay tuned for more of the dates of my “10 tips to improve your landscape and travel photography”.

The herd at sunrise.

Now that I have been home for a little more than a week, I am spending some time catching up on some of my favorite images from the Triangle X Ranch in Wyoming. This was always one I wanted to spend some time getting detail in the right places and doing a little digital darkroom work. I think it turned out pretty nice!

Ride with a view

Ride with a view.

This was one of the images that I did for the Triangle X Ranch a couple of weeks ago. If someone wanted to ride a horse with a view, I know the perfect place! These folks were great sports getting up super early for a couple of mornings to help achieve this image. I can’t wait to return to the Ranch! Thank you Matthew M. George for all of your help on the shoots.

Always searching.

When I visit a location I will shoot that “iconic” view of a scene, but then I look for other compositions to capture. In this case I wanted to include one of the horses from Triangle X Ranch. I was there to record images that say “visit the Ranch”, and the classic view of the Tetons is from the Lodge or from the front porch of your cabin, but as I walked around the horses I decided to take a lower perspective. The horses were actually moving from left to right so I had to sort of set up a few feet ahead of the horse and simply wait until it moved to a point where it framed the mountains. There were 2 really hard parts to getting the shot, first not get stepped on, second don’t kneel down in a horse patty.
