Looking Back at 2019 part 2.

This was one of my favorites of not only 2019, but possibly ever for me. We were at the Kelly Warm Springs in January and there were about 12 Trumpeter Swans taking advantage of the warm water. They had been preening when one looked up just long enough for a couple frames. In post processing I added a little more steam using the Dehaze slider in Lightroom, but moving it to the left, therefore adding haze.

Trumpeter Swans in the mist.

Our workshop group yesterday afternoon made it out to a geothermal pond with 11 Trumpeter Swans swimming and preening. getting down low enough with the cold wind blowing caused a really nice effect. Taking a little bit of that idea into the processing inspired me to make it a little steamier. By “dialing” down the Dehaze slider in Lightroom, it eliminated some distractions in the background. Trumpeter Swans are the largest waterfowl in North America and seeing this large a number in such a small pond was incredible to see and photograph.

Trumpeter Swans taking flight

Trumpeter Swans taking flight.

As we drove out of Jackson Monday headed back to Moose, we saw a large gathering of Swans along the road. Fortunately they were where a pullout was located and we were able to stop and photograph them. As we photographed a few pairs and singles, we heard a ruckus coming from down river. I looked up and saw 2 Swans taking flight. Still low to the water, they flew by. I raised my camera and lens, zooming out as I panned with them, and was able to get probably 10 frames as they flew by me. Several were sharp, but this one had good separation between them and was my favorite image of the encounter.

Trumpeter Swans.

This morning was a beautiful crisp winter morning here in the Tetons. We started out our scouting by shooting at the TA Moulton Barn on Mormon Row. We hiked out in -1 degree temps, and it was really pretty pleasant. We then scouted out the Kelly Warm Springs where we photographed this group, I am guessing a family, of Swans. There are 2 adults and 3 that were probably this year’s signets. The steam rising from the springs made for a really beautiful moody image.
