What a great combination!

Yesterday was the first day I actually got to shoot the new Tamron 100-400mm lens with my Nikon D-850 in the yard, and I was really impressed. The focusing is as fast as the D-500 and stays locked on very well too. I did a little shooting in the yard, but enjoyed the warmth of the Bird Studio to do more shooting. I was hoping the Eastern Bluebirds would fly in for a visit and they did just as I was getting ready to call it a day. The detail seen in the sensor with that lens is incredible. Just like with the horse close up I shared a week ago, the detail on these birds was really good. I can’t wait to see what I can capture in Wyoming next week. It looks like conditions might turn out really nice for us with a little fresh snow and decent temperatures.

Another Example of the Tamron 100-400mm’s Sharpness

Another example of the Tamron 100-400mm’s sharpness.

I continue to be super impressed with the Tamron 100-400mm Di VC USD lens. This was in my Bird Studio 2 days ago. I wanted to test the quickness of the focusing so I purposely would make sure the lens was not focused when the bird landed, then acquire focus and release the shutter. I was using the single spot focus set just above the center of the frame to lock onto the eye. It locked on quickly and as you see, the image is absolutely incredibly sharp. You can use the 1.4x teleconverters from Nikon on this lens as well and I hope to do some testing with that setup in the near future. Again, one of the absolutely most impressive aspects of this lens is the price…$799!

Waiting

Waiting.

When I sit outside and photograph at one of my Bird Studios, I enjoy watching the competition for a spot near a feeder while the birds wait their turn. It seems like there are favorite spots the birds chose and that is why I try to keep changing the post they land on to encourage more perches for them. It is also interesting that they seem to all move from one feeder to another. There could be 5 at one feeder and none at another one moment then all them will move to a different feeder, and this goes on over and over. It would seem they would just spread out and all be at the feeders at the same time. This is one of the many Tufted Titmouse that visit each day. I have seen so many this year, it was a good summer for Titmouse apparently.

Tomato Guardian – Kentucky Warbler

Tomato Guardian.

Yesterday, I had my first Kentucky Warbler visit the backyard. He came in and perched on the tomato cage long enough for a few shots, then flew off. I have been super excited about the number of species that have visited this year.

Hooded Warbler.

Yesterday while having my morning coffee at the Bird Studio, I had a pretty little visitor, a Hooded Warbler. I believe this is a juvenile male, due to the hood closing under the chin, but I could be wrong and it may be a female. It flew in like several other warbler visitors I have had, checking things out, then flying off to the bushes at the edge of the yard. I had a Blackburnian Warbler visit much in the same fashion a couple days ago. I truly love my backyard and my studio area!

Tufted Titmouse and Sunflower

Tufted Titmouse and Sunflower.

Yesterday we rearranged some things in the “Bird Studio” to take advantage of the beautiful sunflowers that are blooming. I decided to take a morning away from cute fawn photos to post a cute bird photo. Not much says summer like a sunflower blooming so I thought with the season in full swing, it was a fitting image. This is one of the juveniles from a recent brood here in Bear Woods. I think they sort of enjoy sitting and looking at the sunflower, sort of like a big screen TV.

Perfect Light for the Bluebirds

Perfect light for the Bluebirds.

They were predicting snow here in North Georgia for yesterday afternoon and evening, and the weatherman got this one right. We got about an inch or so, just enough to cake the roads slick and the ground white. Before the snow got here, the sky was a bright overcast which was perfect for spending a little time outside with the birds. The Eastern Bluebirds came in force, at one time I had 7 at the feeders and had a few more in the trees. The bright overcast allowed me to capture great detail in the birds without going too high on the ISO. Once the snow started falling heavy, the light wasn’t great so no snow pics yet.
