Workflow

Workflow.

Photography, like any other job, requires practice and a routine. A good practice and routine is what makes you proficient in your work. A huge part of the photographic process is the work done once the shutter is released. It is also the part that frustrates so many photographers. Like any other work, if you only do it occasionally, it is tougher to remember all the right steps. In post processing the steps are often referred to as “Workflow”. The way you become proficient in your workflow is to do it each day. I constantly mention in my lectures that I do, and you as a photographer should take one image each day and process it as well. This makes you proficient in the use of your camera and especially in your workflow. For me it is easy when I am at home, I just step into the backyard and photograph “The 3 Chairs”. Frustration down, Proficiency up…less stress…

Time at Home

Time at home.

It seems odd that I am home for almost a month. This has been a busy travel year, but it is good to be at home to enjoy Bear Woods, well except the Georgia heat anyway. It has been a scorcher this year. I have been able to work on some programs updating them for upcoming presentations like this Thursday at the Smyrna Community Center for the Smyrna Chapter of the Georgia Nature Photographers Association. I also have a presentation on Saturday to the Big Canoe Photographers, and then a big presentation in Orlando to the Orlando Camera Club on September 9. I have come up with a name for my project of photographing working animals, which will include service animals, therapy animals, Police K9s, and dogs that have “saved” someone, and I will soon announce the title after much thought. My goal is to have a page celebrating these special animals and avenues which you can directly support the organizations that make their service possible. For now here is a recent sunset over “The 3 Chairs”.

Summer Relief

Summer Relief.

I am really enjoying the brief relief we are experiencing from the typical summer heat we have with a few days of mornings in the 50s and evenings in the low 70s. The birds are loving it too as their activity is high right now. Lots of birds, especially juveniles, flying in to check things out. Lots of Warblers and Vireo chasing the locals around. I know it won’t last long, so I am going to enjoy my coffee on the porch…I might even take my camera out with me!

Foggy Summer Mornings.

We have been having some hot days and really high humidity for the past few weeks. The late evening thunderstorms are adding to the early morning humidity. It does make for some interesting sunrises though. Even when there is no “view”, there is a great view. It is always beautiful over “The 3 Chairs”

How I photograph “The 3 Chairs”

How I photograph “The 3 Chairs”

I decided to do a video of photographing “The 3 Chairs” at sunset. They are the subjects of many of my images and I use them all the time to try new gear and techniques in post processing. I always enjoy looking out my back door and seeing them and what is developing above them in the skies. So, if you can or would like, give a video a watch to see how the images come together. I talk about choosing a focal length on my lens, the compositional thought process, and the use of natural reflectors to light the scene. 😉

Sunset Storm

Sunset Storm.

In photography bad weather makes for great images. This storm that rolled in around sunset was no exception to the rule. The sun cast an eerie glow on the high clouds and the far horizon. The skies above “The 3 Chairs” never disappoint.

Another Great Sunset

Another great sunset.

I was driving in last night and saw the beautiful sunset as I turned onto our road. I figured it would be done by the time I arrived, but was super happy when I walked in and saw it had gotten even better! I grabbed the camera and tripod and jumped out, snapped 5 frames and it was done. “The 3 Chairs” always make it better! This view will never get old!
