One of the Barn Cats.

At Angels on Horseback there are 2 Barn Cats. It took them a little while to warm up to me and others, but now they love the attention. They were given to AOH when their previous owner sold their farm. It appears they were taken in as feral kittens and raised for controlling mice in the barn. They are super sweet and starting to pose for me, be it reluctantly though. I was at the farm yesterday getting some ideas for my new project, Heroes and Healers. I hope to be doing a lot of portraits in the near future for the project and get more images on the page. I have some appointments with K9s, SAR Dogs, and a few individuals lined up in the next few weeks. If you would like to be included in the project, please contact me so we can get something scheduled. Free portraits and exposure to your group if you would like. Send me an email at bearwoodsphoto@gmail.com.

Hydrangea and Ferns

Hydrangea and Ferns.

When I went to Gibbs Gardens last week to photograph the fern dell, there were some scattered hydrangea mixed in on the edges. It took me a little while to find a composition that would show the beauty of the hydrangea as well as the open area of the ferns. The hydrangea are still blooming, and there are a lot of varieties there, so pick a morning and take a hike around the gardens. The daylily and waterlily are still blooming, so you can make a day of it! If you have never been, they even have a great little shop for a sandwich and cold drink too. It is a hidden gem in North Georgia!

Dukes Creek Falls (2)

Dukes Creek Falls (2).

This is the typical image of Dukes Creek Falls that is taken from the current platform. There is a platform that is up some stairs and over a little, but one of the storms a few years ago damaged it and it hasn’t been repaired yet. It is a really nice set of falls and worth the effort of hiking down and up. The trail has several switchbacks and reduces the incline a lot.

Below is the link to the video Cecil and I did while there. I am trying to do much more video content for educational and entertainment purposes. From an educational perspective, many people are visual and learn easier when they see it vs read it. So if you get a chance take a few minutes and check it out. If you like it, please give it a thumbs up, comment, and most of all please subscribe to my YouTube Channel so you will know when I release new video content.

I will be presenting to the Gwinnett Chapter of the Georgia Nature Photographers Association on Wednesday, June 26, 2019 at 7 p.m., open to guests, at Cornerstone Coworking, Lawrenceville, GA.

Green Fern Dell

Green Fern Dell.

Green is my color. It soothes me, calms me, brings me peace. I am always attracted to landscapes of green, so fern dells are always a magnet for me and my camera. This beautiful dell is located at Gibbs Gardens in Ballground, GA. I can’t help but laugh to myself though when years ago I was hiking to a waterfall in North Georgia when we got “geographically displaced” (men don’t get lost, they just get displaced) and we walked through a large dell of ferns. It was incredible, until I felt a tick crawling on my neck. After removing 8 additional ticks we continued our search, we never did find the waterfall, but the ferns were beautiful! If you have never been to Gibbs Gardens, go! It offers so many great things to see. You can even enjoy the ferns without walking through them!

Blacktail Ponds Overlook

Blacktail Ponds Overlook.

A place I have started photographing from more when I visit the Tetons is the Blacktail Ponds Overlook. We didn’t get there during the workshop because we had good conditions at all the “iconic” locations. On the last day as we were preparing to leave we decided to stop and do sunrise from the overlook. Even without light hitting the peaks, it was magnificent and the reflections in the water made it even better. As we drove off we stopped at least 2 more times to capture the incredible light striking the mountains.

Subtleties

Subtleties.

Sometimes when I am creating an image, I don’t focus my attention on what is most distinct or most obvious. For instance, I will use a bank of fog that is diffusing a row of trees or a mountain to draw the viewer into the frame. This scene above Oxbow Bend was perfect for this scenario. The trees in the foreground were mostly clear and the fog thickened as it progressed into the scene. It was low enough that light was still striking the mountains and brought their detail out as well. A subtle composition can be just as strong as long as it is simple and easy.

Snake River Overlook Panoramic

Snake River Overlook Panoramic.

While I was in the Tetons I was shooting a couple new pieces of gear in the field for the first time, the Tamron 35-150mm lens and the Fotopro E9 tripod and gimbal head. I have used both of them prior to the trip, but this was the first big trip where the gear would be put to the “real” test of field shooting. The lens performed to and even exceeded my expectations of being the perfect landscape zoom length for the Tetons. The tripod and gimbal head did as well. I found it was quick and easy to set up, level, solid and steady. I found myself shooting more panoramic images than I usually do because of the ease of shooting with the head because of the simplicity of leveling the base. The markings on the base of the head gave me consistent overlap of the images that I would combine for the final panoramic images. Being in an area that just screams panoramic, I found the combination perfect.
