Looking back at 2019.

I decided that since it is the last month of the year I would take a little time this year and on some days review my images from 2019. We started, like several years prior, in Wyoming for our Winter in the Tetons Workshop. It continues to be not only one of our favorites, but most popular as well. We had a great experience with our friends at the Triangle X Ranch and the Teton Raptor Center, all while being treated to some of the most incredible landscapes this country has to offer. This was from the Snake River Overlook while I was doing some testing of the new Tamron 35-150mm Di VC OSD lens.

A Special Thanksgiving

A Special Thanksgiving.

I know it is a couple days after Thanksgiving, but I was visiting family and pretty much stayed off of the computer for a few days. We all have things in our lives we give thanks for, but for one of my nieces and nephews, they have 2 special reasons for giving thanks. They had twin boys 2 months ago and this was their first Thanksgiving as a family. They have wanted a family for many years and finally their prayers were answered with twin boys. You hear people who refer to babies as “miracle” babies, well these are two of them. For me it is kind of special as well. I photographed their engagement photos, their wedding photos, and now I have made images of my great nephews. They were all just candid photos, nothing set up or studio, just enjoying the moment with family. There are always reasons to give thanks.

St Mary’s Falls, revisited

St Mary’s Falls, revisited.

I was talking with Cecil Holmes yesterday and we discussed how busy things have been and we realized we hadn’t even finished posting images from Montana before we got busy with different trips. We have been working hard to try and get a Montana workshop together for 2020 but it probably won’t happen until 2021. Logistically and timing may not be good for next year. We have to balance costs for the participant and crowds to make it an experience we would like for everyone. We look forward to doing one there in the next few years though, so stay tuned. This is St Mary’s Falls, a beautiful set of falls following a beautiful hike.

South of Heceta Head

South of Heceta Head, Oregon.

I am still visiting some images from my trip to Oregon to teach at the Out of Oregon Conference. On my “off” morning I went with Nick Page’s group to Heceta Head Lighthouse. Looking south from the lighthouse you could see this beautiful layer of fog rolling over the hills and trees. When the sun just rose above the mountain top it illuminated the fog. I cropped it down to this format because there was some bright sky above the ridge line and a tree in the foreground. I am playing with some new software, to me anyway, Lumenzia, and so far it is the easiest I have used in my attempt to do luminosity masks. I’ll keep you posted on my progress, or lack there of, as I go!

Intentional Camera Movement with a twist

Intentional Camera Movement with a twist.

I love Fall and Fall colors. I love to photograph Fall colors, but sometimes I want to be a little more creative vs just a simple image. I will resort to Intentional Camera Movement to get some creative results. People either love it or hate it, but it is a great way to see differently. Yesterday I put together a little video explaining how to capture fall colors with some movement. In the video I demonstrate regular capture, slow capture with movement, and then a multiple exposure technique as well. Take a few minutes to check it out and try something new for your photography.

“Spot”

“Spot”

While I was at PhotoPlus Expo in NYC I conducted 2 sessions in the Tamron Pet Portrait Studio. We were partnered with Best Friends Animal Society in New York City. They brought two dogs hoping to get them some exposure (no pun intended) and ideally adopted. At my first session on Thursday my model was Spot, who is absolutely as cute and sweet as they get. The session started at 10:30 am and there was one lady in the crowd that Spot was immediately attracted to, and she to him. She shared with me how they had lost a dog after many years and she could see that dog in Spot. She went out to find her husband who was busy looking at all the great camera gear at the show to bring him back to meet Spot. He came back and Spot immediately jumped up started licking his face. The couple shared with me that they had planned to spend the day at the expo, but that changed, instead they were headed to Best Friends Animal Society to adopt Spot. Everything went great with their application and Spot was going home with them after his session Friday. Our goal was to help people to learn how to photography their pets, helping to place one of the dogs into a home was awesome! Bertha the other dog we photographed was a sweetheart and she may have met her family as well. The young lady who met her and fell in love with her is taking her family to Best Friends to see how it goes. Thank you Best Friends Animal Society and Tamron Lenses USA for doing such great things like the Pet Portrait Studio!

Today is the day

Today is the day.

I have been working on my “Heroes and Healers” project for a couple of months now, and today is the day that I give the first presentation of the project at the PhotoPlus Expo in NYC. I will continue the project for as long as it will offer opportunities and hopefully expand it as well in the future. It has been very emotional for me to meet the families and hear the stories of how the dogs have changed their lives, and those of others. I will be happy to share their importance in lives to the groups attending.

This is Jacqueline. She is one of the younger dogs in training at Canine Assistants. She is learning how to solve problems on her own. This particular exercise teaches her how to get the treats out of the bottles. She spins them and they fall out. She is funny, when another dog is nearby, she acts like the bottles are empty, and when the other dog walks away she gets the treats out! This will teach her how to get things like medicine bottles when it falls off a table and goes under furniture. The way the folks teach the dogs is amazing, it isn’t repetition, it is to help them think. They are awesome folks!
