Happy Father’s Day.
Evelyn and I made it back to our beloved Bear Woods about 2 a.m. this morning. We left behind Wyoming, a state we feel is our second home at times. I look back on the trip and didn’t really get to shoot many images, or nearly the number of images I would normally have made, but I walk away with many memories of my first trip there with my Dad in 1976. I remember on that trip seeing a landscape for the first time. On this trip I spent time discovering, for me, the Shoshone National Forest and the Apsaroka Mountains. It was so quiet and untouched that it made me feel like that 15 year old wandering in the woods. A Dad can guide you and help to form the man you will become. My Dad guided me to love photography, and to love the land among many other things. All of my trips out there make me thing some 41 years back, but this one was special in my memories. Thank you Gunny for all of my life’s lessons and for introducing me to Wyoming.

New Sirui Graduated ND Filters.
When I shot film I used to use Graduated Neutral Density Filters all the time to balance out the exposure between sky and foreground all the time. With digital I have relied on post processing to do it more. I have found though that in situations where the exposure is greater than 3 stops difference, the detail and colors suffer a little. I have been experimenting with the new Sirui line of filters and filter holder, and so far am very pleased. They come with a very well made filter holder with an 82mm ring. Also included are adapter rings for 67mm, 72mm, and 77mm, others are available. I ordered a 2 and 3 stop Graduated ND which comes in 100x150mm. For the images I used the Tamron SP 24-70mm f2.8 Di VC USD lens on a Nikon D-500. The balanced image is with the 3 stop Grad ND, the lighter image is without any filter. This allows me to spend substantially less time in post processing with great results. The filters are very neutral and create no color shift. They are made of glass and come in a great padded case. All of this fits nicely into a pouch that takes up one spot in my bag. I can see myself using these filters more and spending less time in the digital darkroom with great results. I can’t wait to get to an area other than my backyard, although the view over “The 3 Chairs” is still one of my favorite views. I will do additional post as I master these filters.
