The Top of Rainbow Falls

The top of Rainbow Falls.

The images I have shared of the area of Watkins Glen State Park show a bridge at the top of falls. This is a more isolated image I captured when I walked underneath the falls to the left side of the previous images. I really liked composing the image to have the falls appear to start in a “keyhole” formed by the bridge overhead. I love the green contrast in the area of the keyhole. This area is so beautiful, I definitely need to add it to my “must go back” list.

Along Glen Creek

Along Glen Creek.

This is an image from Watkins Glen State Park about 10 days ago while leading a group on our field trip. Glen Creek winds through the canyon and under the right conditions you could literally spend a day photographing all the cascades on the creek as it twist through the rock walls. There is so much to see in the Finger Lakes Region of NY, but make sure you budget at least half a day to explore Watkins Glen State Park.

Rainbow Falls, Watkins Glen, Vertical

Rainbow Falls, Watkins Glen, Vertical.

I posted a horizontal image of the Rainbow Falls area in Watkins Glen State Park last week, but the vertical doesn’t show the depth of the canyon near as well as a vertical. The canyon walls are very steep and even though we weren’t at the park hiking in at sunrise, the walls shade various parts of the canyon for much of the morning. The area around the Finger Lakes contains many waterfalls and I hope to go back at some point and spend some time visiting and capturing more of them. The fall is supposed to be spectacular and from the images I saw I would have to agree. Thanks again to my wonderful class for a great week of learning and photography.

Taughannock Falls

Taughannock Falls.

It was almost easier finding compositions of this beautiful waterfall than it was to pronounce it. We learned from a park worker it is pronounced Ta-gan-ic. He said think of Organic with a Ta in front of it. I had a great group in Geneva, NY PPSNYS Workshop 2019. We hiked a lot and were rewarded with some beautiful photo opportunities. After photographing from the top, where this image was made, we drove down to the trailhead and hiked all the way back to the falls. The images were well worth the effort. I want to thank the wonderful folks that organized and put on the workshop. Everything ran super smooth and the people in attendance were fantastic and seemed to have a great time! It is beautiful up in the Finger Lakes, but it is great to be back in Bear Woods.

You will notice there is some new gear in my bag (Sony a7Riii), and as a matter of fact, a new bag (Shimoda Explore 40) too! I will do a post soon about the new gear and how I am liking it.

Seneca Lake Milky Way

Seneca Lake Milky Way.

My class I am teaching up here in the Finger Lakes Region were joined by some other folks last night as we were in pursuit of photographing the Milky Way. I had scouted out a location the other night after checking out a few phone Apps. We met last night and went to the tip of the Seneca Lake State Park and waited for the Galactic Core to be visible (10:31 p.m. last night) and began capturing the magic in the sky. We even got to see a couple satellites and the International Space Station fly over head. For some it was their first time to see and photograph the night sky. It was a lot of fun and the images came out great! Thanks to those who joined me, thankfully the mosquitoes weren’t that bad!

Rainbow Falls at Watkins Glen State Park.

I have been up in Geneva, NY teaching at a school for the Professional Photographer’s Society of New York State this week. We took a field trip yesterday to Watkins Glen State Park. It was a bit crowded but we were still treated to some incredible scenery along the hike. It is always great to be out with some very talented photographers and see how they work a subject and their results. They were definitely troopers yesterday with temps in the upper 80’s and lower 90’s even in the shade it was very hot and muggy. We are off on another set of field adventures today and tonight!

A Little Macro Monday

Posted in Equipment I Use, Favorite Places, Random Thoughts, Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on July 22, 2019 by lilybug1960

A little Macro Monday.

As I have been outside photographing the birds and “The 3 Chairs” I have been telling myself to not forget to photograph the Zinnia that are in the garden as well. Finally yesterday I did get a chance to do just that. I haven’t done as much macro photography as I would like this year, but hopefully will as I visit some gardens in the next week.

I finally finished a video yesterday of some time in my backyard photographing the birds. I uploaded it to YouTube last night and if you haven’t seen it yet, check it out. It will give you just a sample of what it is like in the Bear Woods Wildlife Sanctuary. Here is a link to the video. If you like it, please give it a thumbs up, and Subscribe to my channel on YouTube too so you won’t miss any of the videos I release.
