Screech Owl, Captive.

It seems like forever ago that I photographed the Birds of Prey in Holland, MI, but it was only 2 weeks ago! I still haven’t gone through and processed all the images from that shoot or from a week ago in Geneva, NY. At some point I guess I need to finish processing! This was a very cute Screech Owl at the Outdoor Discovery Center near Holland, MI. I’m not sure what got its attention, but the light was beautiful and perfect to light the bird. Please consider supporting rescue, rehab and educational centers in your area. They do such great work for animals on very limited budgets.

Eastern Screech Owl.

Another one of the really great little birds that were part of the Raptor shoot we did with Wingmasters here at NECCC 2019 was the Eastern Screech Owl. This little owl was a huge hit! She liked just blending in with the wood around her, and that helped to get her relaxed while she modeled for the group. I can’t thank Tamron enough for being such a great company and sponsoring not only me to be at the conference but to sponsor Wingmasters as well. Jim from Wingmasters kept saying how much good the sponsorship would do and go towards helping them care for the birds. It isn’t cheap to rehabilitate these guys and he said this would help them for a while, especially the 2 young American Kestrels.

Trayne and Otus.

When we had our educational program with the Teton Raptor Center they introduced us to their 2 Eastern Screech Owls, Trayne and Otus. Trayne is fairly new to the program and is filling in some big shoes for Rayne, who had been with the TRC for years but Rayne’s health declined and had to be euthanized. Becky, the Educational Director, told us the story of the owls and asked if we could get an image of the two of them together looking at the camera. Apparently the owls had other ideas when I tried anyway. Such a cute pair of owls, they huddled close together and fell asleep. We look forward to seeing all the birds and folks at the TRC in May during our spring Tetons Workshop.

Huckleberry.

I have been so busy catching up on images that I have taken over the past 3 weeks along with a lot of other stuff, so I haven’t been out to shoot much new stuff. It is rare that I have a 4 week lull in my schedule, but it has allowed me to finally process a lot of files sitting on the hard drive. Being a professional nature photographer isn’t always about shooting. Its a business and there are lots of other things that take up time. In the next few weeks I will be at the GNPA Expo in Jekyll Island, then up in New Jersey for Photorama 2018. I am really looking forward to both trips and events. For me one thing I will get to do is go to Cape May for the first time in about 20 years! I am doing an event there next year and need to scout. There is also a special side trip that I will tell you about later as well. I have also finalized plans to return to the Space Coast Birding and Wildlife Festival in Titusville next January!

The image today is one of the cute little Eastern Screech Owl, Huckleberry, as he posed for our group at the Birds of Prey workshop. There were beautiful birds but I don’t know if any cooperated better or caught the attention more from our group than Huckleberry. Thanks again to Georgia Mountain Falconry for all your hard work and we are looking forward to the next event!

Eastern Screech Owl, Red Morph.

Yesterday morning we hosted our Birds of Prey Workshop with Georgia Mountain Falconry at Montaluce Winery in Dahlonega, GA. These folks were top notch and the birds they brought were incredible! We even got to go out afterward and witness how the Red-tailed Hawks hunt. From the images I have seen so far and the feedback we have gotten, our participants captured some incredible images. One star of the show was “Huckleberry” an Eastern Screech Owl, Red Morph. He posed on a log for us very well. We will definitely do another one of these in the future, but will wait until the birds complete their Spring feather molt. Thank you again to Buster and his folks!

Eastern Screech Owl – Red Morph.

We were very lucky to have been the first visitors to the Outdoor Discovery Center after the arrival of the red morph of an Eastern Screech Owl. He had injured a wing and isn’t able to be released back into the wild. His first time as a model was great. They didn’t know how he would do and they said he may not want to be out there with folks, but I think he was enjoying the attention. He even fell asleep. Cute little thing. Visit and support your local Centers, they save a lot of birds and educate a whole bunch of folks as to the world around us!
