Capturing the Dawn Song.

My favorite sound as the sky begins to lighten and the birds begin to wake is the Dawn Song. This time of year all the male birds are up early trying to establish territory and find their mates, like this Chestnut-sided Warbler. They begin to sing early, often and loud, together it is the Dawn Song. It is when I am able to identify the large number of species of birds in the area. Often you don’t see some of the Warblers but you will hear them during this time. It is the Dawn Song that encourages me to capture images of songbirds…well…singing! Yesterday before the sun was bright enough to get an image, I had a male Cerulean Warbler sing in the brush just behind the house, then moments later if flew onto the back porch as if to say, “did you recognize my song”? If you aren’t an early riser, do it just once if you can, you won’t regret it!

Chestnut-sided Warbler.

I took a few minutes yesterday morning to walk around the local park here near Bear Woods. It is called Eagle’s Rest and sits on top of Mt. Oglethorpe in Pickens County. I wanted to check on the Warblers migrating through. I spent some time photographing this beautiful Chestnut-sided Warbler gleaning insects and searching for a mate. The light was incredible and he obviously was enjoying the sunshine. Every once in a while he would fly down and check out my gear then return to his morning activities. I did see a female as well so hopefully he was successful in establishing his territory and they will reside here for the summer.

Chestnut-sided Warbler.

I have been seeing several juvenile or first winter Chestnut-sided Warblers in the yard for a couple of weeks, but yesterday was the first adult male (non-breeding plumage) I have seen. I was able to get a few images of him interacting with one of the juveniles too. My backyard has been a treasure chest this year!

Today is Solar Eclipse day here in Bear Woods and across the country. I decided that I didn’t want to fight any traffic today so I will be shooting it in the backyard. I will post images and hopefully a time lapse video of the event in the next few days. Since we are not at a 100%, only somewhere around 98%, I will have to leave a filter on the camera for the images, unless I see it is covering more of the sun. This actually makes it a little easier for me with less gear to worry about. I am really interested to see all the images that come out of the event, which is another big reason I am staying home, since there will be at least million other photographers shooting the eclipse. I have debated on purchasing stock in Nikon and Canon since there is a good chance a lot of sensors will be burning up later today as well. Be careful folks, don’t burn your eyes out!

Chestnut-sided Warbler.

Another one of the summer migrants that has been hanging out with me for several days is a really neat little Chestnut-sided Warbler. He spends most of his time exploring the Crepe Myrtle bushes but wandered closer into the sunflowers the other day to pose. I have said it previously but it is worth repeating, I am really mixed about the fall migration this year because I am seeing so many varieties of Warblers, and I know I will see more, but I really am going to hate to see them go…
