Fading light, evening storm

Fading light, evening storm.

We have either had beautiful sunrises and sunsets or rain and fog. I am actually good with either one, but when we have great light it often happens quickly. I have always kept a camera or at least a point and shoot camera sitting on my desk ready to capture that moment. When this light started to show itself, I grabbed my point and shoot, no for me it isn’t my phone, and had about 10 seconds to capture the light. #bearwoodswildlifesanctuary, #the3chairs, #bearwoodsphotography

Break of Day

Break of Day.

The light didn’t last long this morning but it was enough for me to enjoy a few sips of fresh coffee and breathe in the clean air after a rain overnight. I am in day 3 of webinars, my last one for the week will be at noon local time. Today’s webinar is for Kenmore Camera in Washington and is for the Tamron Tour, “10 tips to improve your landscape and travel photography”. Yesterday was for the Out of Chicago – IN DEPTH conference, the day before the Tamron Tour for The Photo Center in Brick, NJ. That’s a lot of traveling without ever leaving my front porch…2020 you have been a strange year. So if hindsight is 2020, does that mean we are in 2021 yet? #the3chairs, #bearwoodswildlifesanctuary, #bearwoodsphotography

It was 3 years ago that I placed my aluminum foil hat tightly on top of my head and prepared to photograph the total solar eclipse. We were unable to travel an hour or so north to view the totality, but in our yard we could get about 99%. I set up several different cameras to capture it, but the images I liked the most were done with the Tamron SP 150-600mm Di VC USD G2 lens on a Nikon D-500. In post processing I decided to make a composite of the different phases. It was a fun day and I will travel to a location to capture the total solar eclipse in a few years. #withmytamron, #tamron, #tamronusa, #tamronlensesusa, #tamronimagemaster, #tamron150600g2, #sirui, #siruiusa, #siruiimaging, #bearwoodsphotography

Bear Woods and Night Skies time lapse

Bear Woods and Night Skies time lapse.

A little bit of a late post this morning, but I was busy trying something new with my photography. I have really been experimenting and learning to do time lapse photography after being inspired by some of Michael Shainblum’s videos and doing his course, so I decided to set up the camera and give it a try last night/this morning. It isn’t perfect and I have a long way to go, but it is a start for me. To give you an idea of the set up, I used my Nikon Z7 and Tamron SP 15-30mm Di VC USD G2 lens on my Sirui W2204 tripod and Acratech GXP ballhead. I placed the camera outside at about 10 pm, but set the interval timer to start taking images at 11:15. I set it to take 400 images, but stopped a little early, in hindsight I should have done about 600 images. My exposure was 20 seconds, f2.8 at 3200 ISO, so I set the camera to take an image every 21 seconds. I went to bed, waking to check on the camera to make sure no critters had tipped it over at about midnight, and could see it was doing exposures. Not properly calculating when it should end I set my alarm for 1:30 to go get the camera. I found out later, it had done 386 exposures. I downloaded them, processed one, then synced the settings to all the images, rendered the video, added a little music and here we are, well a couple cups of coffee later anyhow. This is definitely something I will do again and hopefully do it better each time!

Fading into the night…

Fading into the night.

We had some pretty nice storms the past few nights up here on the mountain. This was the last of the light over “The 3 Chairs” 2 nights ago. Pretty spectacular color for a summer sky here in the southeast.

A Rainbow and “The 3 Chairs”

A Rainbow and the 3 Chairs.

In all the years we have lived here in Bear Woods, I have always wanted to capture a rainbow over “The 3 Chairs”. The conditions had never been just right and I hadn’t thought much about it recently. This morning I walked out to fill the feeders and looked up to see this rainbow, actually if you look in the upper right corner, you can see the beginning of a double rainbow. I literally ran inside, grabbed the camera on my desk and ran back outside. I went to different locations in the yard and finally settled on this composition. The birdhouse on the right is where the Eastern Bluebirds have their clutch of eggs, and the first raised garden is the beginning of the Backyard Bird Studio. What a great sunrise!

Incoming Front

Incoming front.

The other evening it was really interesting to watch the storm front roll in from the west. We went from clear skies to some beautiful clouds, to really dark clouds to light rain and then clearing overnight. It had been a while since I had captured some beautiful clouds over “The 3 Chairs” so I grabbed the camera and tripod.

A well deserved break

A well deserved break.

I’m not sure which will leave the nest first, the Eastern Bluebirds or the Carolina Wrens. I think the Wrens will leave today or tomorrow, with the Bluebirds leaving probably Thursday or Friday. I do know the adults are ready for a break! They spend pretty much every minute they are awake searching for food. We put out mealworms a couple of times a day to help, but I see them flying in with big juicy bugs, especially spiders. Next to hatch will be the Chipping Sparrows nesting in the honeysuckle vine beside the house. Busy, busy Spring.

Studying weather

Studying weather.

I went to bed Saturday night after looking at the weather conditions that were forecast for Sunday morning. There was a front coming in from the west just a little before sunrise. So if the timing was right, there would be a potential for a very colorful sunrise. I made sure I was ready and waiting and for the most part it did not disappoint. I think some of the low clouds had moved a little farther east than originally forecast, but it still provided some nice color over “The 3 Chairs”.

Familiar Scenes.

During this time of Shelter in Place, we should all prepare to see more images of “The 3 Chairs” and birds in my studio! I hope you don’t get tired of them! This was sunset last night.
