Leslie Elliott and Angels on Horseback.

Truly, one of the most rewarding things I get to photograph is Angels on Horseback and the volunteers and students. Evelyn has been involved for several years now and I get to do a lot of their photography and video. The organization serves several counties in addition to our home county of Pickens here in North Georgia. I have come to know so many great volunteers and students in the years I’ve been working with them. Probably the biggest honor for me has been to get to know Leslie Elliott the Founder of AOH. She and her husband Bruce have become great friends to Evelyn and I as well as the entire Jasper community. Leslie had a vision over 15 years ago to offer therapeutic riding to children and adults. She and others have pursued that vision to their current status (here is a link to check out all they do: https://www.angelsonhorseback.org/). The AOH Fall Horse Show was held this past Saturday and during that show, Leslie was honored for her hard work as she, and her two horses (Taylor left, Macho right), are retiring. Leslie has worked for 15 years to build a great service for disabled children and adults, as well as all the volunteers who have benefited from helping out as well. I know they will miss her, but will be reminded daily of her efforts as they enter the “Leslie Elliott Arena” for each lesson they conduct. Follow your vision, get involved, the World will always be a better place because of those that do.

One of the Barn Cats

One of the Barn Cats.

At Angels on Horseback there are 2 Barn Cats. It took them a little while to warm up to me and others, but now they love the attention. They were given to AOH when their previous owner sold their farm. It appears they were taken in as feral kittens and raised for controlling mice in the barn. They are super sweet and starting to pose for me, be it reluctantly though. I was at the farm yesterday getting some ideas for my new project, Heroes and Healers. I hope to be doing a lot of portraits in the near future for the project and get more images on the page. I have some appointments with K9s, SAR Dogs, and a few individuals lined up in the next few weeks. If you would like to be included in the project, please contact me so we can get something scheduled. Free portraits and exposure to your group if you would like. Send me an email at bearwoodsphoto@gmail.com.

Fabio on the fly.

This will be the last one of Fabio I post for a little while, I promise. He is just a beautiful horse to photograph! He will be a wonderful addition to the therapy horses at Angels on Horseback. He was working off nervous energy from being at a new place and would run for a little then come over and visit. He will start meeting the other horses sometime this week.

Fabio’s Headshot

Fabio’s Headshot.

I had to do a few headshots of Fabio when I was at Angels on Horseback. He is just a very handsome horse. Each of the 7 horses at Angels have a stall in the barn, and on the outside is a photo. This will be his photo probably. In case someone might be interested…a chance for a company or an individual to do something wonderful could be to sponsor one of the horses at the barn. You would have to contact the folks at AOH to find out details, but you would have your name or company’s name on a plate in front of the stall of the horse. It goes a long way in helping them achieve their goal of offering therapy to those in need of their services. I’ll even come do some portraits of you with the horse!

Fabio.

I am very fortunate to be able to volunteer my services as a photographer to Angels on Horseback in Jasper, Georgia. The work they do is incredible and well worth supporting. Sometimes my volunteering is more fun than work. Take the past 2 days for example. I got to meet Fabio, wonder how he got that name? Fabio is a Haflinger horse and just beautiful. He will fit in wonderfully as a therapy horse as his disposition is calm and friendly. He loves to be around people. I will share more images of him over the next few days to showcase his lovely mane! If you don’t know much about Angels on Horseback, please check out their work at angelsonhorseback.org. They can always use donations, and especially volunteers. Stop by sometime meet the horses, they have a Hoedown next month too!

Horses and Rainbows

Horses and Rainbows.

Yesterday was our turn to go down to Angels on Horseback and do their evening feeding. There was a storm coming in as we drove down, and it was a steady rain while I gathered the horses to come into the barn. When we finished feeding them and were letting them back out to the pasture, I noticed a nice break in the clouds to the west. The sun dropped below the cloud line and I immediately looked back to the east. I saw the one of the most vibrant double rainbows I have ever seen. I ran to the car and grabbed the camera, remember I always try to carry a camera with me, and then ran to the hill below the horses. I wanted to capture a few images of both the horses and the barn if possible. I thought I would have only a few minutes to capture images, but it felt like the rainbow lasted for 10 minutes or more. One of the horses, Two Hawk, decided he wanted a close up and walked down to where I was standing. After giving him a nice scratch behind his head, he posed for me. I have never seen such a vivid and more vibrant sky and rainbow than the one I saw last night. The blues in the sky were so intense it was surreal. On a side note, I love LCD screens that tilt like my Canon M6. It allowed me to hold the camera inches above the horse poo and still capture the image, a couple years ago I would have been forced to being doing a load of laundry as soon as I returned to the house, due to having to get down to that angle of view. This was truly being in the right place at the right time, but also being prepared by having a camera with me.

The Sharpness of the new Tamron 100-400mm lens

The Sharpness of the new Tamron 100-400mm lens.

Wouldn’t you know the day I go out into the yard to photograph birds that the light was less than cooperative. I needed to run down to Angels on Horseback to photograph an event with a Senior’s group visiting, so I thought what a great time to test the lens as well. The horses were inside to meet all the folks visiting and they loved the attention.

I wanted to test the Vibration Compensation capabilities of the lens as well as close focus and sharpness. Lexi had some beautiful light at her side so I zoomed in to 400mm and stood about 6 feet away. This was also my first time out with my new Nikon D-850 so it was a test of both pieces of gear. When I got the image onto the computer and could see the detail of the barn in her eyes, needless to say I was super impressed! This lens is absolutely incredibly sharp, and at a price of $799, it is second to none.
