Our group spent a lot of time photographing the details in so many things while we were on Ossabaw Island. One day we were hiking along some causeways looking for birds and alligators, but when we came to a wooded area I noticed how beautiful the backlit palm leaves were. I found one and shared with the group how easy it was to photograph it because of the angle it was relative to us, but also the height that it was located. It made for some nice images! When we went to bed on Monday night we knew it would be a little chilly on Tuesday morning when we went to the beach, but when we woke up we quickly learned it felt a bit colder than chilly! The good thing is the sky would be very clear and the stars would be bright! We weren’t disappointed. The Gate at Ossabaw Island.

I didn’t get to post while I was at our workshop on Ossabaw Island, not because of a lack of internet, but instead a lack of hours in a day. We stayed very busy exploring and photographing, and finished yesterday morning with Night Skies and sunrise on Boneyard Beach. We were on the road to the beach at 3:30am with temperatures in the 40s and winds keeping it cooler still. This image is of the beautiful gate to the main house. With the live oaks and Spanish Moss, it represents so much of the beauty of the island. We will be posting the details for Ossabaw 2025 in the very near future. I’m down on the coast of Georgia for our Ossabaw Island Workshop that starts today. I made it down here early enough to go by one of my favorite places for sunset, Darien. As I stood out there enjoying the evening, I realized this was the first time in a long time that I was able to get out alone and do a little photography. I love being an instructor, but sometimes you need that “you” time. The sunset never lit up like I hoped, but since I was in the area, I stopped by Mudcat Charlie’s for a shrimp basket dinner. When we visited Svínafellsjökull, we hiked down to the base of the glacier and using a longer lens we captured some beautiful details in the glacial ice. We had just enough sunlight to make the ice a cool blue. I have always loved capturing the landscape within the landscape. Northern Lights.

Any time you go to an area like Iceland you hope to get to see Northern Lights, and we were lucky enough to have one evening we got to see a few bands of light for about a half hour or so, and another evening we mainly saw a lot of glow with a few streaks. The evening we went to Vestrahorn, we hoped to see the lights over the mountains, but the clouds moved in and we decided to head back and hopefully catch them along the way. We started seeing a few streaks and found an open area that gave us a good view of the sky. As a side note, we had not originally planned on doing a winter workshop in Iceland for 2025, but due to demand, we are in the process of adding one for February! Svínafellsjökull.

One of our favorite stops on our Iceland Workshop is Svínafellsjökull. It is a great stop as we drive back to Reykjavik as it offers an opportunity to get out stretch the legs and see a beautiful scene. In this image I decided to include, once again, Cecil Holmes to give it some sense of scale. I can’t afford a real model so I use Cecil often in the images. I positioned myself on a hill so I could isolate him against the glacier and the beautiful colors of the ice above him. We have had the pleasure of sitting with Ernie for the past 11 days. It has been a long time since I have had the pleasure of spending time with a puppy. He is about 9 months old and a ball of fun and energy. Of course we had to puppy-proof the house, well try to anyway. It has been a joy and I had lots of fun capturing images of Ernie, but this one is pretty much Ernie in a nutshell. To give you a little perspective as to the size of the ice caves we visited, I got Cecil Holmes to stand near the entrance for scale. You have to squat down to enter, then they open up and little before getting much tighter as you work your way into them. The are often “rooms” that offer more headroom as you go back into the caves. They are actually fairly warm inside as the ice insulates you from wind and some of the cold. Carving out the landscape.

One of the things I love the most about Iceland is how you see the different stages of history happening right before your eyes. you see the formation of land with rising plates and erupting volcanos. You also see how glaciers are carving out valleys and moving rock. It is fascinating to me to imagine what it looked like a thousand years ago, and what it will look like a thousand years from now.
