Round 2

Round 2.

The first set of Bluebirds left the nestbox about 5 days ago and they female has almost finished constructing the second nest already. Soon she will begin laying eggs and Dad will assume all the duties with the first brood. I have been very fortunate they are feeding the kids about 30 feet from the front porch and I can watch and photograph! I offer this tip each year, so here it is again, a day or so after the birds leave the box, remove the nesting material as it is usually filled with parasites. I then use a stiff paint brush and remove any dust that I can. I then put in food grade diatomaceous earth, a powder from old sea creatures. It will kill any remaining blowfly larvae and other parasites without harming the birds. If they ingest it, it actually is high in calcium. I leave that in there for a day then brush it out as well. You can get it at any feed or seed store or a big box, but make sure it is “food grade” and has no added chemicals.
