The Ultimate “Zoo” lens has to be the new Tamron 18-400mm lens

The Ultimate “Zoo” lens has to the be new Tamron 18-400mm.
I have returned from Holland, MI and SWMCCC Weekend of Photography event. I did 5 presentations in 3 days, but still had some time to get out and really put the new Tamron lens through some tests. I went out to the Outdoor Discovery Center on 4 different occasions and I have to say, it worked incredibly well. I will go out on a limb and declare it to be the “Ultimate Zoo” lens. When I say zoo, I would define that as any place that allows you access to wildlife and even flowers in an environment outside of the wild. In other words, it would be pretty impossible to walk up to a wild Golden Eagle and stand within 10 feet and photograph it without it flying off. Wildlife Rehabilitation Centers are another example of this scenario. I found while other folks were struggling with minimum focusing distances, I was able to be off to the side or out of the way but still close enough to isolate smaller parts of the bird. I really think this lens is going to be incredible for anyone who has been thinking of reducing the amount or weight of the gear they are carrying, but not sacrifice quality of quantity of the things they are shooting. I actually placed it beside a mirrorless camera with the equivalent focal length lenses (at least 2 were needed to meet the range), and this lens on a D-500 is not only lighter, it takes up less space! Why go mirrorless to reduce the weight or bulk when this does it incredibly well! You gotta try this lens!!!

  4. Are there plans to do this lens for Pentax DSLR cameras??

    • lilybug1960 Says:

Not that I have seen. Tamron has only listed that it will be available in Canon and Nikon mounts. I don’t work for Tamron, so I can’t say if that will change or not. 😦

Would this be good for landscapes?
