Open Wide!

Open Wide!

This is one of those reasons I love sitting and watching the Bluebirds, and other birds, in the backyard. This is one of the reasons why I put out mealworms. This is one of the reasons why I sell calendars to pay for the mealworms. That moment when one of the baby Bluebirds builds up the courage to fly to the feeders to be fed before its siblings. The others will follow suit soon, but for today, this one has figured out the routine. You can see the bright yellow inside the juvenile’s mouth. It helps to give the parents a good target to get in and out quickly. I will have to post an image showing how the membrane over the eyes closes allowing the bird to see but protects it from injury during feeding and other times. Sort of a clear eyelid, it is called a nictitating membrane.
