A Rare Treat for Me!

A Rare Treat for Me.
We get several types of Swallows in the area, several of which will breed here, Barn Swallows and Northern Rough-winged primarily. This year though when I put up all the bird houses at Angels on Horseback, I didn’t expect to have Tree Swallows build a nest in one of the boxes. We are at the very southern edge of their breeding range. They have been sitting on the eggs for a couple of weeks and I expect to have some hatchlings within a week or so. They took up residence in a great place to photograph so I hope to get some nice images with no real disturbance to them. The house they chose is at the entrance to the barn and they mainly sit in the opening and watch folks walk by. Everyone there loves seeing their face and keeps a good distance not to disturb them. It was interesting to watch as the female would leave the nest to fly and feed for a few minutes, the male would stay at the opening only flying off when she returned. Beautiful little birds!
