Some Updates

Some Updates.

I returned from Kentucky and Monday found a few changes around here in Bear Woods. I noticed the Bluebirds weren’t visiting the nestbox in the backyard for several hours. I went and check some of the other boxes in the yard and the one the Chickadees were building in had the Bluebirds sitting on top. They were checking inside and even taking nesting material to the house. After watching the original house and not seeing them visit for a long time I decided to check inside. As I had thought, the eggs that were laid before the big freeze we had were not viable (almost 4 weeks old) but instead of building on top of the eggs, she laid 5 more beside them. There were a total of 9 eggs in the box. She obviously realized she couldn’t sit on all of the eggs and determine which were the old eggs, she abandoned the box. I waited for a couple more hours of watching them attempting to take over the other nest and decided it was time to empty the original box. When I opened the nest box it was obvious it had been a few days since they had been to the nest. There was literally a dust and some dew on the eggs. It is still very early in the season and typically they would just be building about now, so I feel confident they will still lay eggs this spring.

We also had one of our bee hives swarm over the weekend. It is something they will just do sometimes. We are in the process of getting a new hive to place inside. I placed 6 Bluebird houses down at Angels on Horseback about a week and a half ago and checking the nestboxes yesterday, 5 of the 6 have nest partially or completely built with birds actively building and tending to them. I kept my distance most of the time to observe and did a few images from a distance. It is a great location with pastures covering 15 acres to place houses and they obviously welcome the boxes as well. I should have lots of photo ops in the next few weeks and months.
