Vicki Wilson

Vicki Wilson.
We are home in Bear Woods from our trip to Lexington, KY. Our last day of Road to the Horse, which is the World Championship of Colt Starting, was an exciting one with a winner that showed more courage than most anyone I have seen. The winner was Vicki Wilson from New Zealand. She was a late pick when one of the other contestants had to have surgery that prevented her from participating. She is a Jumper and most, if not all of this was new to her. She was the first participant to use an English Saddle, wear a helmet, and have an all female crew among other things. Did I mention on the first day she went to the ground and dislocated her shoulder? She participated the next two days with limited movement of her left arm and I am willing to bet in pain the entire time. She iced her shoulder down during breaks. Her approach was very different than the other 3, but obviously very successful. She finished her Rail work and Obstacle course with about 10 minutes remaining, so she took off the saddle and did a lot of the course bareback! She even added a few obstacles to put a little icing on her cake. Along with the $100,000 dollar check and other prizes she won, she leaves with her colt and the respect of all in attendance. I was really impressed by the whole event even though I am not going to rush out and try and start a colt, I’ll leave that to the tough women I watched for 3 days.
