As Water Flows

As water flows.

A question I often get is “how were the slot canyons made?” Well, what happens is for hundreds, thousands and possibly a million years, water has flowed through the cracks in the sandstone. As it opens the crack wider it allows sand, rocks and other debris to flow through as well. Each time it carves the canyon a little wider and a little deeper. We don’t see the work it does since typically it is done over very long periods of time. Sand settles down on the floor of the canyon each time smoothing it out. Regulations regarding slot canyons are interesting and most people don’t understand why they are so tough. If it looks like rain, they are put on alert, if it starts to rain within a certain distance and direction from the canyon, the canyon will be evacuated. These canyons become “spillways” for the water to travel, so just a small amount of rain upstream can cause several feet traveling at a high rate of speed to sweep through the canyon floor. On August 12, 1997 11 tourists lost their lives in Lower Antelope Canyon when a storm dumped water 7 miles upstream. Pay attention to the conditions around you when you visit one of these beautiful canyons. Create lots of images while you are there.
