Set an extra plate

Set an extra plate.

Today is not about Summer starting. Today is not about BBQs. Today is not about jumping into the swimming pool for the first time this year. Today is not about just an extra day off. Today is the day we here in the US take time to thank those who died in service to this country. Many of them were kids straight out of High School sent off to fight in places with volcanic sand beaches with names like Iwo Jima and Midway Island. Many died in miserable conditions in trenches in Europe, or in the sands of Africa. Many didn’t want to be there but went because they believed in Freedom. No country is perfect, but this country is great because we had kids willing to give their lives for the belief that they could keep those freedoms alive for friends and family. Many lie in graves that are marked “Unknown”, many never made it home. Let us not let their sacrifice be in vain.

Remember those who gave us our freedoms to have BBQ today, to drink a beer, protest unjust, or to just sit and reflect on those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their beliefs. Set an extra plate for those who made it possible.

  1. Well said, David. And your beautiful photo is a fitting tribute to those who are gone.
