Drama in the skies

Drama in the skies.

I finally made it to Berry College in Rome, GA to see and photograph the Eagles nesting there. They have some great webcams to watch them as well. I am a total geek when it comes to Eagles, I leave the streaming video on in my office all day. It is a good thing I went yesterday, we have almost 2″ of snow on the ground up here today.

I arrived in time to see the male return to the nest carrying a big catfish. I joked with some new friends out there that it looked like he had some hushpuppies in his other talon! While the female was out away from the nest, the male started calling and getting anxious. We looked up and saw 2 Bald Eagles flying towards the nest. The male left the nest and went after the 2 other Eagles, even bumping them high in the sky. After he successfully sent them on their way, he returned to the nest. It almost appeared he was sticking his chest out a little after that battle! Awesome sight to see. This is him returning to his Eaglettes.

Tamron SP 150-600mm Di VC USD lens on a Nikon D-800, Aperture Priority, f8, +1 stop of exposure compensation for the clouds and bright light, Auto focus mode in AF-C (the lens tracked incredibly well), ISO 800, resulting in a shutter speed of 1/1600th of a second, Vanguard Abeo Monopod, lens on VC to compensate for shaking, processed in Lightroom 5.

Addendum: One of the other photographers at Berry College, who is there often and a great authority on the Eagles, looked closely at her images and said the Eagle returning to the nest was the female. One of the 2 birds that came in was the female, the other was a juvenile bird. I am thinking possibly B3, which is last year’s bird possibly since it was familiar with the nest site.
