“I’m not fat…I’m fluffy”

Often folks will see birds like this and ask why the bird is so fat. Birds fluff out like this for several reasons. In winter they will often fluff up for warmth. Their down feathers are great insulation and a way to get them warm is to fluff up the down, just like fluffing a down pillow. Another reason is as a display for other birds, mainly the opposite sex during mating season. This bird is fluffing as a show of dominance. It is sitting near one of the feeders and has claimed it. It worked too. Not even the Juncos, which are larger birds than the Siskins, would go near the feeder!
