When I am photographing macro subjects I like to put myself into their surroundings. I like to make it an environmental portrait when possible. Often we just make macro images of tiny things big and try to get maximum sharpness. With this image I wanted to give the feeling of the praying mantis on the hunt. I wanted to show the vast world it lives in, even if it is a square yard. The shallow depth of field is to isolate the head and blur the background.

Tamron SP 180mm f3.5 Di Macro lens on a Sony a7R, Aperture Priority, f5.6, -.7 stops of exposure compensation, ISO 800 resulting in a shutter speed of 1/400th of a second, Vanguard Abeo Pro tripod and BBH-200 head, processed in Lightroom 5.

  1. Beautiful shot! Love praying mantises (or whatever their plural is)!

I have been watching this little one competing with a spider a couple of stalks away for food. I wonder what will happen if they cross paths…
